Every year, on August 28th and 29th, the island of Halki comes alive with one of its most anticipated celebrations—the Feast of Saint John Alargas. This two-night festival is a perfect blend of faith, tradition, and festivity, with music, dancing, and community spirit lasting until sunrise!
Night 1: The Monastery of Agios Ioannis Alargas (August 28)
On the evening of August 28th, locals and visitors make their way to the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Alargas, a peaceful and sacred place nestled in the remote hills of Halki. To ensure everyone can attend, mini-vans run throughout the night, transporting people to and from the monastery.
Once there, the celebration begins! Under the starlit sky, guests are welcomed with a traditional meal of lamb and potatoes, generously offered to everyone as part of the festivities. With live Greek music, dancing, and plenty of wine, the night turns into an unforgettable celebration of faith and togetherness. The dancing and merriment continue until sunrise, creating a magical and deeply meaningful experience for all.
Night 2: Festivities at the Port (August 29)
The next evening, on August 29th, the festival moves from the monastery to the port of Halki. The energy remains high as locals and visitors gather along the waterfront for another night of dancing, music, and celebration. As waves gently lap against the shore, the joyful atmosphere fills the air, and once again, the festivities last until the sun rises.
This two-night event is more than just a festival—it’s a homecoming for many Halki natives, a cultural and religious tradition, and a true expression of community, joy, and gratitude.
If you ever find yourself in Halki at the end of August, don’t miss the chance to be part of this extraordinary celebration. Come dance, feast, and experience the island’s most cherished tradition!
